Hair Musing: Lou Schoof

The beginning of the year is often synonymous with new starts, goals and fitness regimes that more often than not end up being abandoned before January is even over. At Glasshouse, we’re therefore not necessarily fans of making New Year’s ‘resolutions’, but a chance for a refresh is always welcome. January can be the perfect time to experiment with a new look and our latest muse comes in the form of up-and-coming German model Lou Schoof, who’s blonde bob has been seen everywhere from Margaret Howell campaigns to the pages of Vogue.

Lou’s petite facial features and boyish charm are reminiscent of late 90s stars, with a bob sitting just above the shoulders and bangs that make a case for the return of the eyelash skimming full fringe, as opposed to the ‘micro fringe’ we saw so much of last year. Modern yet classic, edgy yet flattering, the fullness and blunt edges of this look give off just the right amount of attitude to tackle 2019 head on.

Growing up in a remote part of Germany, Lou was more interested in becoming a lawyer than a model but was scouted as a teenager quite out of the blue whilst on a train with her father. Several years later, despite now having travelled across the world numerous times, the 22 year old still manages to maintain a level-headed and somewhat profound approach to life.

“If you look closely, no existence is flawless and easy. With distance, most things seem attractive. I would rather work on my own life than chase after others’” she told Interview Magazine, a sure sign that Lou is dedicated to her work but with her feet firmly planted on the ground.

Often shot alongside her brother, Nils Schoof, the pair try to visit their remote hometown in Germany frequently and refer to it as a source of inspiration for them both. “It’s a beautiful region with thick forests, fields as far as the eye can see and beautiful beaches” they told Conde Nast Traveller. “The landscape in this corner of Germany always inspires us.”

Unlike most in the fashion industry, Lou and her brother also claim not to be party people, and are advocates of a more healthy lifestyle instead. “We stay focused on our job and travels, and save energy for adventures during the day. In our opinion it’s important to have a good sleep - at least 8 hours - every night. Energy is the key to happiness and success.” Perhaps it’s their countryside upbringing, but we certainly want to embrace this fuss-free outlook in 2019, along with a hairstyle to match.

Worn straight with a subtle tuck under the chin and a rounded fringe, this bob is like a classic shirt: it adds a stylish edge to a casual look, worn paired back and makeup free, yet turns into a sleek and sharp look when combined with a more formal ensemble and a red lip when needed. Striking a perfect balance between contemporary and timeless, this is a cut that’s perfect for new beginnings.
