As we edge into December and winter gets into its full gloomy-skied swing of things, it’s a tempting time of year to switch up our hair and beauty looks for something that’ll lift our moods and give us an aesthetic boost. If summer is synonymous with sun-kissed blondes and low-maintenance beach waves, the colder season stands for something different when it comes to our hair. Which is why we’re turning to chocolate brown - a rich, glossy, stone-cold classic that lends itself to chilly mornings and dark afternoons.

The hair industry has never been so inundated with new colour terms and techniques. Whether it’s ‘cold brew balayage’ or ‘illuminated brunette’, deciding what we want our hair to look like might have become a more creative process, but it also feels like more of a confusing one. Which is why we’re re-shining a spotlight on a shade that’s never fallen out of favour. A deep chocolate brown done well can be flattering, simple and big on impact - just the ticket at a time of year when you might be feeling a bit lack-lustre.

Many people may have found themselves shying away from this type of brown before, especially if they’re conscious about any red undertone in their hair. However the idea of warm tones isn’t one we should necessarily be nervous about. A warm brown can work wonders in enhancing certain skin tones and blends well with the naturally-warm undertones that are already in most people’s hair - making it a versatile option that packs a punch.

We turned to our stylist Mel for some chocolate-brown-based advice: “Rich and glossy chocolate brown shades are a popular choice at this time of year - they are flattering on most skin tones and are especially suited to skin with a warmer undertone. It is an easier shade to maintain during the winter months as you won’t have to worry as much about the colour fading in the sunshine. When using Organic Colour Systems to achieve the desired shade, you will experience a more natural fade compared to mainstream ammonia based colours whilst also preserving the long-term health of your hair, as their permanent colour does not damage the hair condition in the way that ammonia can.”
