As Winter turns into Spring, we’re crawling out of hibernation and starting to slowly fill up our social calendars again. Which is why we were delighted when the details of this latest event landed in our inbox. Organised by some of our favourite East London female business bosses, Our Mothers’ Daughters is a celebration of being a woman in 2018. Launching on International Women’s Day next week and continuing right through until Mother’s Day, this special pop-up has been masterminded by four creative women. First up is Amy Ward - a previous Glasshouse collaborator and the brains behind Bug Clothing, her range of easy linen wear that we’re constantly lusting after. Also making up the foursome is Ana Kerin of ceramics brand Kana London, Hana Bauman-Lyons of vintage homeware brand Eesome Shop and jewellery designer Karina Banks.
With a powerful girl gang at the helm, these four have taken over a Stoke Newington space from 8th-13th March to honour all things female-focused, all the while supporting small, local business. You’ll be able to pick up some of their handcrafted wares - so if you’re in the market for one of Kana London’s tongue-in-cheek F**K plates, a beautiful linen tie-up dress from Amy or a carefully-sourced piece of Eesome for your home, then this is the place to do it. Each brand will be offering 10% off their own products (if you needed further convincing).
It feels like a time of hope and change for women. Campaigns such as #TimesUp have propelled the issue of gender equality to the top of every headline, business and conversation and it seems now more than ever, women are taking matters into their own hands. Along with the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote only a few weeks ago, Our Mothers’ Daughters couldn’t have come at a better time.
“We wanted to make a sort of girl heaven” Amy said about organising the event, “We’re four women who are working really hard to run businesses of our own and deciding to do the event over Mother’s Day and launching it on International Women’s Day just felt perfect.” Alongside the shop, the girls have organised a bevy of exciting events to coincide. A special Mother’s Day life drawing class with East London artist of the moment, Alexa Coe, is definitely one to reserve your ticket for. We love Alexa’s evocative line drawings of bodies, faces and the female form, and this class is specifically based on women drawing women. Instructions to bring an old lipstick have definitely got us feeling intrigued.
An introduction into aromatherapy is hosted by natural skincare brand Aqua Oleum, and you’ll even leave with your own bespoke facial oil. If jewellery is you thing, then Karina Banks will have all the tools for a special one-off jewellery making workshop. Popping up over the weekend as well will be bespoke drinks, the chance to get your nails done and sit back and watch a feminist film. No stone has been left unturned!
“Marking 100 years since we received the right to vote, the fact that we are able to do what we are doing is wonderful” explained Amy, “We’re making a beautiful space filled with products that are made locally, by brands that work to a sustainable production cycle, a place where you can come and have a coffee, hang out and chat to us, pick up some fresh flowers, get a manicure, drink a cocktail, see a film and do some life drawing. It’s basically heaven.” Amy, we couldn’t agree more. You can always count on this creative foursome to think outside the box and they’ve certainly succeeded with this six day event. We can’t wait to swing by.
