Whether you’re a colour lover or a makeup minimalist, you will most likely have come across suggestions for choosing colours that ‘work’ for your skin tone. Whilst matching your warm tones, cool tones and neutrals can certainly serve as a good place to start when finding a product that will suit you, today we’re here to say that perhaps these rules don’t have to dictate your makeup collection entirely.
“When we are so restrictive with our shade choices, we lose the expressive and fun side of makeup” says Emily, our Front of House Manager and resident Makeup Artist at Glasshouse. “While there are certain shades that work harmoniously together, who said we can’t break the rules and embrace a little clashing colour?”
Inspired by this concept, we partnered with photography duo Al and K and Emily set to work creating three different makeup looks for a shoot that celebrates the diversity of colour and the freedom that comes with it. “I wanted to show that colour can work on all skin tones; you needn’t conform and wear the makeup shades the industry deems complimentary. The best makeup shades for you are the ones that make you feel good.”
For glowing skin, Emily used the Evolve Miracle Facial Oil on Ella, Ji-Won and Bimpe before applying a touch of Ilia Tinted Moisturiser and RMS ‘Un’ Cover Up to cover any blemishes whilst keeping the look minimal. Natural looking brows were achieved thanks to Jane Iredale’s Brow Gel in clear, plus a quick slick of Jane Iredale Mascara on the lashes. Our Senior Stylist Ashleigh ensured that the hair was kept slick and smooth, showing off as much of the face as possible.
Using a selection of RMS products, Emily added a pop of lilac to the otherwise paired back base on each model for the first look, followed by a dreamy smudged red lip for the second, and a peach blush look to finish. Aside from the base, the exact same colours were used on each model, proving that your skin tone needn’t define the colours you wear.
